Once the convoy passed through the gate, Diego completed a commo check among the vehicles.

Ty, who was in the lead vehicle, said, “Be sure to keep your eyes open for any sign of movement.”

“Roger,” Diego said then set down the walkie-talkie. He glanced over his shoulder at Clint and Maureen, sitting in the back of the Hummer. “It’s going to be a long drive. You might as well try to get some sleep.”

“I’ll help keep watch,” Clint said, gazing out his window.

Maureen offered him a tight smile.

“Having second thoughts?” he asked, arching an eyebrow.

“I’ll do my part.”

Diego faced forward again, his gaze going to the sky. The clouds were thin this afternoon. He wondered whether they’d have sunshine the next day, which could be problematic.

“Yeah, we might get some sun,” Clint said behind him. “That not worry you?”

“It might complicate things,” Diego said. “But we’ve got rain ponchos we can don if it gets too strong.”

“What happens when y’all stand in the light?”

“We burn,” he said. “Not like the movies though, but our skin does blister, and our eyesight can be compromised. It’s painful.”

“Can it kill you?”

Diego chuckled. “Are you hoping it will?”

Clint sighed. “Now’s not a good time.”

Which meant he thought the day would come… Diego didn’t blame him for his antipathy.

“How were you turned?” Maureen asked.

It wasn’t something the vampires liked to talk about because they wouldn’t be making any more to fill out their ranks. Another commitment they’d made among themselves after they’d survived the transformation. “Movies got some of it right. We were drained to the point our hearts slowed and then stopped. Then the medical staff took bags of vampire blood they’d taken from captured individuals and transfused their blood into our bodies.”

“What happened to the vampires they drained?” Maureen asked.

“They were…put down.”

“Killed?”

“Yes. They couldn’t be trusted. They’d killed humans. We were slowly introduced to consuming human blood, never from a host in those first weeks. We were ravenous, and our leadership considered putting us down as well because they didn’t think we could be controlled.”’

“How’d they keep you restrained?” Clint asked.

“Clint,” he said, “I can’t help the feeling you’re filing this information away to use later.”

“I’m just curious how they got to the point where they could trust you?”

“They never did,” Diego said honestly. “The camp was overrun with a large pack of wolves. One of our keepers released us, telling us we had a choice, help them fight back the attack to earn our freedom or join the wolves, but we were their last hope.

“We fought the wolves. Then when the last was…dispatched…we refused to return to our cells. That’s when the Colonel in charge of the post decided it was time to close down operations and head east.”

“So, they left you with all those vehicles and weapons…”

“And left behind humans, including a medic, who could do the blood draws we needed, but we didn’t need those anymore. We oversaw our own feedings. We killed anyone who took too much. We learned control.
